It can certainly be detrimental to your search engine rankings although the search engines are getting much better at filtering this out. - Include the preferred URLs in your Sitemap file. When the search engine crawler comes across different pages with the same content, this may help show the crawler that your version is the preferred version.

- When creating content use absolute links.
